Blueberries are a real treat for me. I enjoy eating them as they are and in combination with other food.
For breakfast, I add them to my oatmeal or to my yoghurt with basic muesli. Ever tried a blueberry – walnut salad for lunch? Very easy to make and the 2 tastes combine very well. Or blueberries with raw spinach and feta cheese?
A blueberry sauce goes very well with porc, duck and chicken.
For desert, try crepes with blueberries and cream, or pancakes with blueberry sauce. Or have a little vanilla ice cream with blueberries or with blueberry sauce.
Blueberries have many health benefits.
Heart health
The heart health improves thanks to the fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. It contains little monosaturated fat and no cholesterol at all. They contain potassium, vitamin B6 and B9 and vitamin C. The fiber helps to reduce the bad cholesterol in your blood vessels.
Lower blood pressure
Several studies strongly indicate a correlation between daily consumption of blueberries and lower blood pressure.
Anti-cancer
Blueberries have one of the highest antioxidant working of foods. The flavonoids in the blueberries are responsible for this. In fact, the flavonoids are not antioxidants themselves, but being a little bit toxec, they stimulate our immune system to fight harder again toxic substances in our body and to destroy cancerous cells.
Slower aging
Free radicals in our body damage cell DNA. The more our DNA is damages, the older we get, independent of our real age. By fighting these free radicals, blueberries help us to age more slowly. The flavonoids reduce the DNA damage of our brain cells too.
Improves your memory
Like all other berries, walnuts, (fatty )fish, carrots, spinach, tea, tofu and daily exercising, blueberries improve your memory and your brain power. The antioxidant capacity prevents stress in brain cells and it improves the functioning of the brain (Source: Journal of Nutrition, 2009).
